How to Activate eSIM on iPhone

Four ways to get an eSIM running on your iPhone — QR code, manual entry, during setup, or Quick Transfer between iPhones. Takes about 5 minutes.

Before You Start

Every iPhone from the XS onward (2018+) supports eSIM. Before you start, make sure you have:

Compatible iPhone

iPhone XS or later, including all XR, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, and Air models

Unlocked carrier status

Check Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock reads "No SIM restrictions"

WiFi or data connection

You need internet to download the eSIM profile — home WiFi is more reliable than airport WiFi

QR code or activation details

Have your provider's QR code, or the SM-DP+ address and activation code from your confirmation email

Heads Up: iPhone 17 and iPhone Air Have No SIM Tray

US-purchased iPhone 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max ship with no physical SIM slot — eSIM only, same as every US iPhone since the 14 in 2022. The iPhone Air takes this further: it's eSIM-only in every country, including regions where the standard iPhone 17 still has a tray. If you're on any recent iPhone, an eSIM travel plan isn't optional convenience — for a lot of you, it's the only way to add a second line. The upside: all current models store 8+ eSIM profiles and run two active lines at once, so your home number and a travel data plan can run side by side.

qr_code_scannerQR Code

The fastest method — works for nearly every eSIM provider

1

Open SettingsCellular (or Mobile Data)

2

Tap Add eSIM

3

Select Use QR Code

4

Point your camera at the QR code from your provider's app, email, or website

5

When it's detected, tap Continue

6

Wait for the carrier plan to download — this takes 30-60 seconds on WiFi

7

Label the plan (e.g., "Travel Data") and choose which line is your Default Line for calls/iMessage and which handles Cellular Data

8

If traveling internationally, toggle on Data Roaming for the new eSIM line

Tip: On iOS 17.4 and later, if your QR code arrives in Mail or Safari, you can skip the Settings app entirely — press and hold the code, tap Add eSIM, then Continue.

keyboardManual Entry

No QR code, or scanning isn't working — use this instead

1

Open SettingsCellularAdd eSIM

2

Tap Use QR Code, then tap Enter Details Manually at the bottom

3

Enter the SM-DP+ Address from your provider's confirmation email

4

Enter the Activation Code (sometimes labeled "matching ID") from the same email

5

Tap Next and wait for the plan to download

6

Label the line and set your Default Line and Cellular Data preferences

Tip: Every major eSIM provider (Airalo, Saily, Nomad, Holafly, GigSky) includes the SM-DP+ address and activation code as plain text in the order confirmation — check your email even if the QR code works fine, as a backup.

Setting up a brand-new or freshly reset iPhone

1

Turn on the iPhone and proceed through the initial setup screens

2

When you reach the Set Up Cellular screen, tap Use QR Code

3

Scan your provider's QR code and follow the prompts

4

Continue through the rest of setup — the eSIM finishes installing in the background

Tip: If you don't have your QR code handy during setup, tap Set Up Later in Settings and add the eSIM afterward from Settings → Cellular.

swap_horizQuick Transfer

Moving your existing carrier eSIM to a new iPhone

1

Requires iOS 18.4 or later on both iPhones, signed into the same Apple ID

2

On the new iPhone: SettingsCellularAdd eSIMTransfer from Nearby iPhone

3

Keep both phones within Bluetooth range (about 30 feet) and on the same WiFi network

4

Confirm the transfer prompt that appears on your old iPhone

5

Wait 60-120 seconds while the profile migrates — don't close Settings on either device

6

Once complete, the old iPhone shows "No SIM" and the new one activates automatically

Tip: Quick Transfer works with 47+ carriers across 35 countries (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, EE, Vodafone, and others). It's built for moving your home carrier line between your own iPhones — not for installing a new travel eSIM, which still needs its own QR code.

Troubleshooting Common Errors

"Unable to Add eSIM" or "Not Supported" error

Your iPhone is likely carrier-locked to a different network. Check Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock. If it names a carrier instead of "No SIM restrictions," you'll need to request an unlock from that carrier first.

QR code won't scan

Increase screen brightness on whatever's displaying the code, hold the phone steady 6-8 inches away, and make sure you're not scanning a low-resolution screenshot. Use Enter Details Manually as a fallback — every provider includes the SM-DP+ address and activation code in your confirmation email.

eSIM installed but shows "No Service"

Toggle Airplane Mode on and off, then restart the phone. Confirm Data Roaming is on for the eSIM line (Settings → Cellular → the eSIM line → Data Roaming), and check with your provider that the plan's activation window has actually started.

Slow speeds after activation

Check whether you've hit a fair-use data cap — many "unlimited" plans throttle after a threshold. Try manually switching between 5G and 4G/LTE in Settings → Cellular → the eSIM line → Voice & Data.
