Connectivity Guide for Egypt
byCharles McQuainEgypt's mobile network is served by three operators: Vodafone Egypt (the largest), Orange Egypt, and Etisalat (branded as "e&" Egypt). All three have extensive 4G/LTE coverage in Cairo, Alexandria, and the major tourist corridors along the Nile. Vodafone Egypt generally has the widest overall footprint, and most eSIM providers for travelers route through either Vodafone or Orange's networks.
Coverage in Egypt follows the population — the Nile Valley and Delta have strong signal, as do the Red Sea resort towns (Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada, Marsa Alam). The major tourist sites including the Giza Pyramids, Luxor temples, Valley of the Kings, Abu Simbel, and Aswan all have reliable coverage. However, the Western Desert, Sinai interior (outside of Sharm and Dahab), and remote oases like Siwa can have limited or no signal.
Mobile data is essential for navigating Cairo's notoriously chaotic traffic — ride-hailing apps Uber and Careem are widely used and far easier than negotiating with taxi drivers. Google Maps works well in Egyptian cities. Translation apps are helpful since English signage outside of major tourist areas is limited.
VoIP Services May Be Restricted
Egypt has periodically throttled or blocked VoIP services like WhatsApp calls and FaceTime. Standard messaging and data browsing work normally, but voice and video calls over data may be unreliable. If VoIP calling is important to you, consider downloading a VPN before arrival as a backup option.
