Staying Connected in Canada
byCharles McQuainCanada's mobile market is run by three national carriers: Rogers, Bell, and Telus, which the regulator calls the Top 3. They aren't three separate networks, though. Bell and Telus have shared their radio networks for years under a reciprocal arrangement, each building towers in its own regions and letting the other's customers use them, so an eSIM that lists "Bell and Telus" is largely on one network. Rogers runs its own. Regional carriers fill in the map: SaskTel in Saskatchewan, Vidéotron in Quebec, and Freedom Mobile, owned by Vidéotron's parent Quebecor since 2023, which runs its own network mainly in cities in Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia.
Which network you get depends on the provider. Some travel eSIMs name only Bell or Telus, some name only Rogers, and some name both sides. Most Canadians live within a few hours of the US border, and that's where coverage is strongest: Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Ottawa, Calgary, and Quebec City are well covered on every network, so for a city trip, price is what matters.
Coverage thins out quickly beyond the populated corridor. Parks Canada says the Icefields Parkway between Lake Louise and Jasper has no year-round cell coverage, apart from limited service at the Columbia Icefield from May to early October; backcountry trails in the Rockies have none, and long highway stretches between towns can drop out. That's where a plan that names Rogers as well as Bell or Telus gives you a second set of towers to fall back on. Download offline maps before you leave Banff, Lake Louise, or Jasper.
Your US Plan May Already Cover Canada
Most current unlimited plans from T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T include Canada with a high-speed data allowance. T-Mobile's Experience More includes up to 15 GB and Experience Beyond up to 30 GB before slowing down. Budget, prepaid, and older plans often leave Canada out. Check your plan's international page first; an eSIM is worth it if Canada isn't included, you'll outrun the allowance, or you're not on a US plan.
