Staying Connected in Mexico

Telcel, owned by América Móvil, carries about 58% of the country's active mobile lines and is generally regarded as having the widest coverage, particularly in rural areas. AT&T Mexico is second with about 16%. Movistar has about 14%, but since 2019 it has carried its customers' traffic over AT&T's radio network, so an eSIM that lists "AT&T and Movistar" is in practice on one network.
Which network you get depends on the provider. Many of the cheapest travel eSIMs for Mexico name only AT&T and Movistar, while others name Telcel, and some don't name a Mexican carrier at all. Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, the Cancún–Tulum corridor, Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos, and Oaxaca city are well covered on every network, so for a city or resort trip, price is what matters.
Coverage thins out at jungle ruins in the Yucatán and Chiapas, on highway stretches between Baja towns, and on mountain routes such as the Copper Canyon. That's where a plan that names Telcel earns its keep. Cenotes and caves have no signal once you're underground, and small islands like Holbox and Isla Mujeres can be weaker than the mainland. Your US Plan May Already Cover Mexico
Most current unlimited plans from T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T include Mexico with a high-speed data allowance. T-Mobile's Experience More includes up to 15 GB and Experience Beyond up to 30 GB before slowing to 256 kbps. Budget, prepaid, and older plans often leave Mexico out. Check your plan's international page first; an eSIM is worth it if Mexico isn't included, you'll outrun the allowance, or you're not on a US plan.
