Connectivity Guide for Tanzania
byCharles McQuainTanzania has four main mobile networks: Vodacom (the largest, with about a third of subscriptions), Yas (the former Tigo, rebranded in late 2024), Airtel, and Halotel. Travel eSIMs don't all use the same one — depending on the provider you'll land on Airtel, Vodacom, Halotel, or Yas, and each plan's network is listed in the comparison below. 4G reaches the vast majority of the population. Vodacom launched 5G in 2022 in cities including Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Arusha, and Dodoma, but it covers only a small slice of the country's land area.
Zanzibar is well covered, with 4G in Stone Town and the main beach areas like Nungwi, Kendwa, and Paje, and weaker pockets along the quieter southeast coast. On safari it's a different story. Signal is usually workable around Seronera and many lodges in the central Serengeti and along the Ngorongoro Crater rim, but it fades on the crater floor and in the remote western and northern Serengeti. On Kilimanjaro, state operator TTCL has offered internet at Horombo Hut since 2022 — but none of the travel eSIMs we track use TTCL, and you shouldn't count on a usable connection higher up the mountain.
Bolt is the dominant ride-hailing app, alongside inDrive — Uber pulled out of Tanzania in January 2026. WhatsApp is how most safari operators, drivers, and guesthouses communicate, and lodge WiFi varies widely, so an eSIM is the more dependable way to stay reachable between parks.
One quirk to know before you land: X (formerly Twitter) has been restricted on Tanzanian networks since May 2025.
Plan for Safari Gaps, Not Just Data Caps
Large parts of a safari day can be out of range. Download offline maps and your lodge and park confirmations before leaving Arusha or Karatu, and share your itinerary with someone at home. Back in range at camp, a mid-size plan easily covers catching up on messages and photo uploads.
