Vietnam's Surprisingly Strong Mobile Network
byCharles McQuainVietnam's mobile infrastructure is one of Southeast Asia's best-kept secrets. Viettel, the country's largest carrier (and a military-owned enterprise), provides coverage across 97% of the population. Mobifone and Vinaphone round out the big three. 4G/LTE is available in all major cities and most rural areas, with 5G launching in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
For budget-conscious travelers, Vietnam offers some of the cheapest eSIM data in the world. Plans start under $5 for generous data allowances — SimOptions sells 5 GB for 7 days at $4.90. The combination of low prices and strong coverage makes Vietnam one of the easiest countries for eSIM connectivity.
Even off-the-beaten-path destinations like Sapa, Ha Giang, Ninh Binh, and the Central Highlands have usable 4G from Viettel. The only real dead zones are deep in national parks or very remote mountainous areas near the Laotian and Chinese borders.
Grab Is Essential in Vietnam
Grab (ride-hailing) and GrabFood are indispensable in Vietnam. Metered taxis are unreliable for tourists, but Grab provides fixed pricing, GPS tracking, and cashless payment. Having reliable eSIM data means you can summon a Grab ride anywhere, anytime — a genuine safety and convenience advantage.
