What Makes a Good International eSIM
Every "best eSIM" ranking is a list of the same five or six providers. The interesting question isn't whosells eSIMs — it's what separates the ones worth buying from the ones that look fine until something goes wrong at an airport. Five things actually matter:
Coverage in the country you’re actually visiting
Most providers route through 1–3 partner carriers per country. If your provider routes through a carrier with patchy coverage in your destination (e.g., a 3G-only network in a city center), your $20 plan is a $20 brick. Always check which carrier the plan rides on.
Honest data limits (not asterisked “unlimited”)
Half the “unlimited” plans in the category aren’t really unlimited — they cap at 1–2GB/day before throttling to 2G speeds. That’s technically uncapped data, but functionally useless. Read the daily limit, not the headline.
App quality and install reliability
The actual moment of truth is when you scan the QR code on your phone. A buggy app or a broken provisioning step at this point will ruin your trip’s first hour. Polished installation flows are the single best predictor of whether the rest of the experience will work.
Hotspot support
If you ever need to share data with a laptop or a partner’s phone, hotspot has to be allowed. Most reputable providers now allow it, but some unlimited plans still block it. Check before you buy.
Live support when something breaks

Why I Built These Rankings
I started using travel eSIMs in January 2023 on my honeymoon in Paris, after looking at a $140 Verizon TravelPass bill for a week of data and deciding there had to be a better way. The first eSIM I bought (Airalo) cost $12 for the same week. Same speeds, same coverage, one-tenth the price.
That experience is what eventually pushed me to build AvailSim. I'm heading back to Paris in May 2026 for my dad's 70th birthday — going on Airalo again. How to Pick Your eSIM in 60 Seconds
If you're paralyzed by choice, run through this short decision tree before you buy:
Is your trip one country or multiple?
One country → buy a local plan (cheapest per GB). Multiple countries → buy a regional plan (e.g., Eurolink, Asialink). 5+ countries across continents → consider a global plan, but those are rarely the best value.
Will you use under 5GB or over 5GB?
