Airalo eSIM Review 2026

Here's what sold me on Airalo: pricing that makes carrier roaming look absurd. For context, I used to pay Verizon $10/day for TravelPass on trips to Europe and Asia. That's $70 for a week — and the data was throttled. Airalo's 7-day Japan plans cost $8 for 3GB to $17 for 10GB, depending on how much data you need.

The pricing model is simple. Local plans (single country) are cheapest, regional plans (e.g., all of Europe) cost more, and global plans are the priciest. The per-GB cost drops as you buy bigger plans — in Japan, 1GB costs $4, while 10GB for 7 days is $17 ($1.70/GB). My advice: buy slightly more than you think you'll need. It's cheaper per-GB and saves you the hassle of topping up in the middle of a trip.

Airalo also runs frequent promotions (10-15% off) and has a referral program that gives both parties $3 in credits. For travelers taking multiple trips a year, these savings add up fast.

With 200+ countries and regions, Airalo's coverage is as wide as any eSIM provider I've come across. This includes places that some smaller competitors skip entirely — smaller Caribbean islands, African nations, and Central Asian countries. If you're going somewhere off the beaten path, Airalo probably has a plan for it.

Network quality varies by destination since Airalo partners with different local carriers in each country. In popular spots like Japan, Thailand, and most of Europe, speeds are solid. In less developed markets, expect more variability. I'll be testing this firsthand on upcoming trips to France, Ireland, Egypt, and Jordan in 2026 and will update with real speed test data.

5G is available in select countries but not everywhere. Honestly, for typical travel use — maps, messaging, social media, the occasional video call — you're not going to notice the difference between 4G and 5G on your phone.

The Airalo app is genuinely the best in the eSIM space — and I've looked at a lot of them building this site. The purchase flow is clean: select your country, pick a plan, pay, scan the QR code. Done in 2-3 minutes. The interface just makes sense, which isn't something I can say about every provider's app.

The biggest tip I can give you (and the one I learned the hard way in Paris): install your eSIM before your trip. You can purchase and set everything up days in advance, then just activate when you land. Don't be like me, fumbling with airport WiFi in the arrivals hall. The app also supports multiple eSIM profiles, so if you travel frequently, you can keep profiles saved for your regular destinations.

The top-up feature is a real advantage too. If you run low on data mid-trip, you can buy more without installing a new eSIM. Not every provider offers this, and with some you'd need to start over with a whole new plan.

If there's one area where Airalo falls short, it's support. They offer 24/7 live chat (in the app and on the web) plus email, but response times can be slow — especially during peak travel seasons. I've seen reports of 2-6 hour waits for non-urgent issues, and that's not great when you're stuck without data in a foreign country.

The silver lining is that Airalo's self-service resources are actually pretty good. Their help center covers most common issues, and the app itself walks you through troubleshooting steps. In my experience, if you follow the setup instructions and activate before traveling, you probably won't need to contact support at all.
