Connectivity Guide for the Bahamas
byCharles McQuainThe Bahamas has two mobile networks: BTC (Bahamas Telecommunications Company), the incumbent with the widest reach, and Aliv, a newer competitor with strong 4G in the main population centers. Travel eSIMs generally roam on BTC. Coverage in Nassau (New Providence) and Freeport (Grand Bahama) is reliable 4G LTE, on par with what you'd expect in a mid-size US city.
The catch is the Out Islands. The Bahamas is an archipelago of 700+ islands and cays, and coverage drops off fast once you leave New Providence and Grand Bahama. Abaco has decent signal around Marsh Harbour but goes quiet on the smaller cays. Eleuthera and Harbour Island cover their main settlements but not much beyond. Exuma's George Town has usable 4G, but the surrounding out-cays are inconsistent at best.
If your trip is a Nassau resort stay or a Freeport cruise stop, don't overthink it — coverage is genuinely good and an eSIM will outperform resort WiFi for a fraction of the cost. If you're chartering between cays, sailing the Exuma chain, or staying at a remote out-island lodge, expect real dead zones and plan accordingly — download offline maps and let people know you may go quiet for stretches.
WhatsApp is the default way excursion operators, boat charters, and even some restaurants confirm bookings across the islands, so keeping data on is worth it even where speeds are modest.
Nassau and Freeport Are Great. The Out Islands Are Not.
Don't judge Bahamas coverage by a Nassau cruise-port stop and assume it holds up everywhere. If your itinerary includes the Exumas, the Abacos beyond Marsh Harbour, or a remote out-island lodge, budget for gaps in coverage, not just gaps in data.
