Connectivity Guide for Belize
byCharles McQuainBelize has two main mobile networks: Digi, run by Belize Telemedia (BTL), and Smart, run by Speednet. Both offer 4G LTE. Sources disagree on whether any 5G is live, so plan on 4G. Travel eSIMs here tend to cost more and offer smaller data sizes than in most of the region, so compare the full list rather than assuming a big plan is available.
Coverage is strongest where visitors spend most of their time: Belize City, San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, Placencia, Dangriga, and San Ignacio. It weakens in remote jungle, on smaller cayes, and in the far south. On boat trips to the outer reef and atolls, expect little or no signal once you're well offshore.
Most hotels, dive shops, and tour operators take bookings over WhatsApp, so it's worth having data before you land. Download offline maps for the Hummingbird Highway and the Cayo District before you drive, and save tour confirmations ahead of any trip to the reef or Maya sites.
Crossing to Tikal?
Many visitors add Tikal from San Ignacio, but a Belize-only eSIM stops working once you cross into Guatemala. Add a separate Guatemala plan or check that a regional plan lists both countries.
