Connectivity Guide for Cambodia
byCharles McQuainCambodia has three major mobile carriers: Smart Axiata (fastest speeds in urban areas with new 5G coverage), Metfone (widest coverage at 95%+ of the country, owned by Vietnam's Viettel), and Cellcard (strong in urban areas). All three launched 5G in January 2026, currently available in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and several provincial capitals.
Phnom Penh and Siem Reap have excellent 4G connectivity from all carriers. Sihanoukville, Kampot, Battambang, and other tourist towns have reliable coverage. The temples of Angkor Wat have good signal in the main temple complex, though deeper jungle temples like Beng Mealea and Koh Ker may have weaker connectivity. Rural areas between cities are well covered by Metfone but can be patchy with other carriers.
Data is essential in Cambodia for ride-hailing via PassApp and Grab, navigating tuk-tuk prices, and translating Khmer menus. Most hotels and cafes offer free WiFi, but speeds are inconsistent outside Phnom Penh. The US dollar is widely used alongside the Cambodian riel, so you won't need payment apps — cash is king for most tourist transactions.
PassApp Is Cambodia's Essential Ride App
PassApp is Cambodia's most popular ride-hailing app — more widely used than Grab in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. It works for tuk-tuks, motos, and cars with fixed prices. Download it before you arrive and have an active data connection to book rides directly from the airport.
