Navigating the Great Firewall: eSIM Connectivity in China
byCharles McQuainChina has three major carriers: China Mobile (the world's largest by subscribers), China Unicom, and China Telecom. 5G coverage is extensive in major cities — Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, and Hangzhou all have strong 5G networks. 4G/LTE coverage reaches virtually all populated areas, including smaller cities and most rural regions along major transport routes.
The most critical factor for choosing a China eSIM is the Great Firewall. China blocks Google, Gmail, Google Maps, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and thousands of other services that travelers rely on. The good news: most international travel eSIMs route traffic through servers outside mainland China, which inherently bypasses these restrictions — no separate VPN app needed. Providers like Holafly and Yesim explicitly market this feature.
For budget travelers, Nomad offers solid value — 20 GB for $25 on 5G with Great Firewall bypass through Hong Kong routing. Mobimatter is cheaper still, at $13.99 for 20 GB through third-party carriers. For unlimited data, Nomad ($25 for 7 days) and Airalo ($27) both undercut Holafly ($27.50), which markets explicit firewall bypass on China Mobile.
Important: iPhones purchased in mainland China do not support eSIM — only the physical SIM slot. If you bought your iPhone in China, you cannot use travel eSIMs. iPhones from Hong Kong, Macau, and all other countries support eSIM normally.
Great Firewall Bypass — Most Travel eSIMs Work
International travel eSIMs route your data through servers outside China, automatically bypassing the Great Firewall. This means Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, and other blocked services work without a separate VPN. Holafly and Yesim explicitly advertise this; Airalo, Nomad, Saily, and Ubigi achieve it through international routing. Always verify with your provider before traveling.
