Connectivity Guide for the Czech Republic

byCharles McQuain

The Czech Republic (Czechia) has three major mobile operators: O2 Czech Republic (the largest, with roughly 40% market share and the widest coverage), T-Mobile Czech Republic, and Vodafone Czech Republic. All three operate dense 4G/LTE networks covering 99%+ of the population and have rolled out 5G in Prague, Brno, Ostrava, Plzeň, and a growing list of mid-sized cities. Most travel eSIMs route through O2 or T-Mobile because both offer strong speeds alongside nationwide reach.

Prague has outstanding connectivity — the entire metro system, all tram lines, and every tourist site (Old Town Square, Charles Bridge, Prague Castle, Vyšehrad, Žižkov) have strong 4G/5G signal. Brno, Olomouc, Český Krumlov, Kutná Hora, and Karlovy Vary all have reliable coverage in the historic centers and along the main tourist routes. Intercity trains (České dráhy) have decent signal along the Prague–Brno–Ostrava corridor, with occasional gaps in tunnels and deep valleys in the Bohemian and Moravian countryside.

Czechia is in the EU, so eSIM plans marketed as 'EU' coverage work here automatically under EU roaming regulations. That makes a regional Europe plan often the best value if you're combining Prague with Vienna, Berlin, or Budapest. However, Czechia uses the Czech koruna (CZK), not the euro — keep this in mind for payments and exchange rates. Apple Pay, Google Pay, and tap-to-pay are accepted virtually everywhere in tourist areas.

Data is particularly useful in Czechia for the PID Lítačka app (Prague public transit tickets), Bolt for ride-hailing, Google Translate for Czech menus and signs, and Mapy.cz — the Czech alternative to Google Maps that has better coverage of hiking trails and smaller towns. Free WiFi is widely available in Prague cafés and metro stations, but your own data is faster and more consistent.

EU Roaming Covers Czechia — But It Uses Koruna, Not Euro

The Czech Republic is a full EU member, so any eSIM with EU roaming works here at no extra cost. This makes regional Europe plans a great fit if you're on a multi-country trip. Just remember that Czechia opted out of the euro — you'll pay in Czech koruna (CZK), and ATMs will ask whether to charge you in CZK or your home currency. Always choose CZK to avoid bad conversion markups (Dynamic Currency Conversion).
