Staying Connected Across France
byCharles McQuainFrance has a special place in my eSIM journey — it's where I first used one, on my honeymoon in January 2023. I made the mistake of trying to activate at Paris Orly Airport on terrible WiFi (don't do this). But once I got connected, the network was fast and reliable. France has excellent mobile infrastructure powered by Orange, SFR, Bouygues, and Free Mobile, with 5G now available across Paris, Lyon, Marseille, and other major cities.
If you're combining France with other European countries — which most travelers do — an EU regional eSIM plan is the way to go. A single plan covers France plus 30+ other EU countries at the same rates. I'm heading back to Paris in May 2026 and plan to test multiple eSIM providers head-to-head this time, with actual speed test data and screenshots.
Even rural France has solid coverage. The wine regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy, the Loire Valley, and Normandy all have reliable 4G. Orange has the widest rural footprint, so plans routed through their network tend to work best outside the cities.
Paris Metro Connectivity
The Paris Metro now has 4G coverage across all stations and most tunnel sections. You can use navigation apps, check train times, and message while underground. This was a major upgrade — and it's a lifesaver when you're trying to figure out transfers at Chatelet.
