Connectivity Guide for Finland
byCharles McQuainFinland has three mobile networks: Elisa, Telia, and DNA. All three run 5G, and Finland's networks are among the fastest in Europe. Telia and DNA share their network in much of northern and eastern Finland through a joint company, Suomen Yhteisverkko, so the two often perform similarly up north.
Helsinki, Turku, Tampere, and the other cities have dependable 4G and 5G. In Lapland, Rovaniemi and the ski resorts, including Levi, Ylläs, Saariselkä, and Pyhä, are well covered, but signal gets patchy on the open fells, along remote roads, and in the far north toward Utsjoki and Kilpisjärvi. Husky, snowmobile, and aurora tours often go well beyond reliable coverage.
Bolt and Uber both operate in Helsinki, and the HSL app handles public transport tickets there. Book long-distance trains in the VR app. Most cafés and hotels have free Wi-Fi, but data is what keeps maps, tour pickups, and aurora alerts working once you're outside town.
Arctic Cold Drains Phone Batteries
Winter temperatures in Lapland often fall well below freezing, and a cold phone can shut down at 30% or more. Keep it in an inside pocket, carry a power bank, and download offline maps before tours, since a dead phone means no navigation.
