Connectivity Guide for Hong Kong
byCharles McQuainHong Kong has four major mobile operators: CSL (owned by HKT/PCCW), 3HK (Hutchison), China Mobile Hong Kong (CMHK), and SmarTone. All four operate dense 4G and 5G networks across the territory. Hong Kong consistently ranks among the fastest mobile internet markets in the world, with average speeds exceeding 100 Mbps on 5G.
Coverage is excellent virtually everywhere — Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, the New Territories, and even most hiking trails have reliable signal. The MTR subway system has full coverage on all lines and in all stations. You can expect fast data on the Star Ferry, the Peak Tram, and even on remote beaches in Sai Kung and Lantau.
Unlike mainland China, Hong Kong does NOT have the Great Firewall. Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, and all other services work normally. If you are combining Hong Kong with a mainland China trip, you will need separate eSIMs — your China plan will not work the same way in Hong Kong and vice versa.
No Great Firewall in Hong Kong
Hong Kong operates under a separate internet framework from mainland China. All websites and apps — including Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook — work without restrictions. If traveling to both Hong Kong and mainland China, you will need separate eSIM plans or a regional plan that covers both.
