eSIM Guide for Traveling in India
byCharles McQuainIndia's mobile market is the world's second largest, dominated by Jio (Reliance), Airtel, and Vi (Vodafone Idea). Jio revolutionized the market with aggressive 4G pricing and now leads 5G deployment across major cities. For eSIM travelers, Airtel-routed plans generally offer the best combination of speed and reliability in tourist areas.
India has historically had strict regulations around SIM cards for foreigners, requiring passport verification and local addresses. eSIMs bypass much of this hassle — you can activate before arrival without any in-country paperwork. This alone makes eSIM the preferred connectivity option for tourists.
Coverage in India varies enormously by region. Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Goa, Kerala's coast, and Rajasthan's major cities (Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur) all have strong 4G. Rural areas and mountainous regions like Ladakh, Spiti Valley, and parts of the Northeast have limited coverage. For Himalayan treks, expect extended offline periods.
Skip the SIM Card Queue
Buying a local Indian SIM card as a foreigner involves passport copies, photos, address verification, and 24-48 hour activation delays. An eSIM eliminates all of this — activate before your flight and have data the moment you land in Delhi or Mumbai.
