Navigating Connectivity Across the Indonesian Archipelago
byCharles McQuainIndonesia spans over 17,000 islands, making mobile coverage inherently uneven. Telkomsel is the dominant carrier with the widest coverage across the archipelago, followed by Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, XL Axiata, and Smartfren. For reliable connectivity beyond Java and Bali, Telkomsel-routed eSIMs are the clear choice.
Bali — Indonesia's most visited destination — has excellent 4G coverage from all carriers across Kuta, Seminyak, Ubud, Canggu, and Uluwatu. Even the Nusa Islands (Nusa Penida, Lembongan, Ceningan) have usable 4G. Jakarta and Yogyakarta also have strong connectivity, with 5G available in parts of Jakarta.
For travelers exploring further — Komodo, Flores, Sulawesi, or Papua — expect coverage quality to decrease significantly. Telkomsel reaches the most remote areas, but smaller islands and mountainous interiors will have gaps. Download offline maps for any adventure beyond the main tourist trail.
Bali Coverage Is Strong — Other Islands Vary
While Bali and Java have reliable 4G everywhere, the Gili Islands have limited coverage (Telkomsel works best). Komodo/Flores have patchy signal outside Labuan Bajo. If island-hopping is your plan, choose a Telkomsel-based eSIM for the best reach.
