Connectivity Guide for Ireland

byCharles McQuain

Ireland's mobile market is served by three main carriers: Vodafone Ireland (the largest by subscriber count), Three Ireland, and Eir. Vodafone and Three both offer strong 4G/LTE coverage across most of the country, while Eir has been expanding its network. 5G is available in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, and other major cities through all three providers, though most eSIM travelers will connect via 4G/LTE which covers approximately 99% of the population.

Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, and Killarney all have excellent mobile coverage. The Wild Atlantic Way — Ireland's iconic 2,500km coastal route — has reliable coverage through most towns and villages, with occasional gaps on remote headlands and mountain passes in Connemara, the Beara Peninsula, and parts of Donegal. The Aran Islands have basic coverage in the main villages but limited signal elsewhere. Ring of Kerry has generally good coverage along the main route.

Mobile data is essential for navigating Ireland's narrow country roads, which can be confusing without GPS. Google Maps works well throughout the country, and having data lets you check weather forecasts (which change rapidly in Ireland), book accommodations last-minute, and look up pub session schedules. Free WiFi is available in most cafés, hotels, and pubs in tourist areas, but your own data connection adds valuable flexibility.

I'm heading to Dublin in September 2026 and plan to test several eSIM providers while I'm there. I'll update this page with real speed tests, coverage impressions, and provider reviews once I'm back — so check back for hands-on results.

EU Roaming Covers Ireland

Ireland is an EU member state, so eSIM plans with EU roaming include Ireland at no extra cost. If you are visiting multiple European countries, a regional EU plan is often the best value. Note that Northern Ireland (part of the UK) is NOT covered by EU roaming — if your trip crosses the border, check whether your plan includes UK coverage as well.
