Connectivity Guide for Israel
byCharles McQuainIsrael has three major mobile operators: Partner (formerly Orange, one of the largest), Cellcom, and Pelephone, plus the budget carrier Hot Mobile running on Partner's network. All three majors operate 5G networks, and Israel's compact geography means 4G coverage is close to universal in populated areas. Travel eSIMs typically connect through Partner or Cellcom, both of which deliver fast, reliable LTE in every city travelers actually visit.
Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa, and Eilat all have excellent 4G/5G coverage. The Dead Sea resorts at Ein Bokek have strong signal, as does Masada (including the summit and cable car). The main highways — Route 1 between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, Route 90 along the Jordan Valley to the Dead Sea and Eilat — are well covered. The only meaningful gaps are deep in the Negev desert, in the Ramon Crater hiking areas, and in some wadis where canyon walls block signal.
Mobile data matters more in Israel than almost anywhere: WhatsApp is the default for everything (restaurant bookings, tour confirmations, even some government services), Moovit — the Israeli-built transit app — is essential for buses and the Tel Aviv light rail, and Gett is the dominant taxi app. Israel is heavily cashless, and contactless payment works everywhere from shuk stalls to street food stands.
Most travel eSIMs for Israel are data-only, which is fine in practice: calls happen on WhatsApp, and one-time SMS codes can usually go to your home number kept active on dual SIM. If you're crossing into Jordan at the Allenby Bridge or Eilat/Aqaba crossing for a Petra side trip, note that your Israel eSIM will not work in Jordan — pick a plan that covers both countries or buy a separate Jordan eSIM.
Watch Your Network Near the Dead Sea and Borders
Along the Dead Sea, in Eilat, and near the northern border, phones routinely latch onto Jordanian, Egyptian, or Lebanese networks — which your Israel eSIM doesn't cover, so data simply stops working. If you lose signal in a border area, manually select your Israeli network (Partner, Cellcom, or Pelephone) in your phone's network settings instead of leaving it on automatic.
