Connectivity Guide for Kazakhstan
byCharles McQuainKazakhstan's main mobile operators are Kcell (which also runs the activ brand), Beeline Kazakhstan, and Mobile Telecom-Service, which runs the Tele2 and Altel brands. 5G is still rolling out: the government's target is 75% coverage of Astana, Almaty, and Shymkent by 2027, so expect 4G as the everyday standard and 5G only in parts of the big cities.
Almaty, Astana, and Shymkent are well served. The country is enormous, though, and service can thin out on long drives between cities and in the mountains. Download offline maps before day trips to Charyn Canyon or the Kolsai Lakes, and before heading into the hills above Almaty.
Yandex Go and inDrive are the usual ride apps, and 2GIS is the map locals rely on in cities, with far better business and transit detail than Google Maps. WhatsApp and Telegram are both widely used, and a translation app helps, since Russian and Kazakh are far more common than English.
You May Get an IMEI Text
Under rules in force since March 24, 2025, foreign visitors may receive an SMS asking them to verify their phone's IMEI on the kz-imei.kz portal, and verification is mandatory for devices first imported after that date. The published guidance doesn't clearly address short stays on a roaming eSIM, so check the current rules before you travel and don't ignore the message if one arrives.
