Connectivity Guide for Norway
byCharles McQuainNorway has three mobile operators: Telenor (the former state monopoly and still the clear leader in coverage, reaching 99%+ of the country), Telia Norge, and ice.net (the smallest but growing, with strong 4G in populated areas). Telenor is the default choice for travel eSIMs because it reaches places the others don't — remote fjord villages, Lofoten cabins, and almost all of northern Norway including Tromsø and the Arctic Circle. 5G is available in Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim, Stavanger, Tromsø, and a growing list of smaller cities.
Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim, Stavanger, and Tromsø all have excellent 4G/5G coverage. Popular fjord routes — Nærøyfjord, Geirangerfjord, Sognefjord, Lysefjord — have strong Telenor coverage along the main ferries and viewpoints, though steep cliff walls occasionally block signal. The Lofoten Islands have good coverage in all the fishing villages (Reine, Henningsvær, Å) and along the E10 highway. Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock), Trolltunga, and Kjerag have coverage at the trailheads and summits, with occasional gaps mid-hike.
Northern Norway and Svalbard deserve special mention. Tromsø, Alta, and Kirkenes all have full 4G/5G from Telenor and Telia. Svalbard (Longyearbyen) has 4G from Telenor only — but note that most international eSIMs do NOT include Svalbard in their Norway coverage, because it sits outside the standard Norwegian mobile zone. If you're going to Svalbard, confirm coverage explicitly with your provider or plan to buy a local SIM in Longyearbyen.
Norway is one of the most cashless countries on earth — Vipps (the local mobile payment app), Apple Pay, and Google Pay are accepted everywhere, and many places refuse cash entirely. You will need constant data for payments, ferry bookings (some fjord ferries are app-only in 2026), and the excellent UT.no hiking app which displays marked trails and real-time weather.
Norway Is in the EEA, Not the EU
Norway is part of the European Economic Area but is NOT an EU member state. This matters for two reasons: (1) most 'EU' eSIM plans do NOT automatically include Norway — always verify the country list before buying, and (2) EU roaming regulations don't apply, so even some European roaming plans exclude Norway. Dedicated Norway eSIMs or Europe plans that explicitly list Norway are the safest bet.
