Connectivity Guide for Oman
byCharles McQuainOman has three mobile networks: Omantel, Ooredoo, and Vodafone Oman, the newest of the three. Opensignal's January 2026 report put Omantel first for coverage and 5G coverage, and Ooredoo first for download speed. 5G is available, mostly in populated areas.
Muscat, Nizwa, Sur, Sohar, and Salalah are well served, and so are the main highways between them. Service gets less reliable on remote stretches, including mountain roads around Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Shams, wadis, the Wahiba Sands, and the far desert. Oman is a classic road-trip country, so download offline maps for the whole route before you set out.
Otaxi and Mwasalat are the local taxi apps in Muscat, though many visitors rent a car. WhatsApp voice and video calls have been reported working without a VPN since December 2024, which is a change from older travel advice, but keep a backup in mind in case your plan or network behaves differently.
Driving to Musandam?
The Musandam Peninsula is separated from the rest of Oman by the UAE, so the road there crosses a border. An Oman-only eSIM won't work on the UAE stretch. Download your route first, or check that your plan lists both countries.
