Staying Connected in Portugal
byCharles McQuainPortugal's mobile network is served by three operators — MEO (Altice), NOS, and Vodafone — all offering strong 4G coverage nationwide and growing 5G in major cities. Lisbon and Porto have excellent connectivity, and even the Algarve coast is well served with fast mobile data.
As an EU member, Portugal benefits from roam-like-at-home regulations. If you're combining Portugal with Spain (a very common trip), a European regional eSIM plan covers both countries seamlessly. This is often the smartest choice for Iberian Peninsula trips.
The Azores and Madeira, Portugal's Atlantic island territories, are fully covered by Portuguese carriers with no roaming surcharges. MEO and NOS both have good coverage on the main islands, making these remote archipelagos surprisingly well-connected for such far-flung destinations.
Azores & Madeira: Full Coverage, No Surcharges
Both the Azores (Sao Miguel, Terceira, Faial, etc.) and Madeira are Portuguese territory with full domestic coverage. Your Portugal or EU eSIM plan works identically on these islands — no roaming fees, no surprises. 4G is available across all populated areas.
