Connectivity Guide for Romania
byCharles McQuainRomania has three mobile networks: Orange, Digi, and Vodafone. Telekom Romania's mobile business no longer exists — it was split between Digi and Vodafone in 2025 — so ignore older guides that still list it. Orange has the widest 5G footprint, reaching nearly half the population, while Digi has the most mobile-data users. Travel eSIMs here mostly ride Orange, sometimes alongside Vodafone or Digi.
Bucharest, Brașov, Sibiu, and Cluj-Napoca all have fast, reliable coverage, with 5G concentrated in cities and along major highways. The Danube Delta is covered around Tulcea, Sulina, and Sfântu Gheorghe, but a 2020 survey by Romania's telecom regulator found dead zones out on the side channels and lakes. In the Carpathians — including the Făgăraș ridge — don't assume you'll have signal on the trail; 112 is the emergency number.
Because Romania is in the EU, any Europe-wide eSIM covers it, and if you're combining Romania with Hungary, Bulgaria, or other EU countries, a regional plan is often simpler than buying per country. Bolt and Uber both operate in Bucharest, Cluj, and Brașov.
Data Is Cheap Here — Size Up
Romania-only plans are cheaper per GB than most countries we track, so stepping up from a small plan to a large one costs relatively little. If you'll be navigating, streaming, or tethering a laptop, buying more data up front is usually better value than topping up mid-trip.
