Connectivity Guide for Saudi Arabia
byCharles McQuainSaudi Arabia has three mobile operators: STC (the former state monopoly and clear market leader), Mobily, and Zain. All three run extensive 5G networks — Saudi Arabia ranks among the world's top countries for 5G availability — and 4G coverage blankets every city and the long intercity highways. Travel eSIMs typically connect via STC or Mobily, both excellent choices.
Riyadh, Jeddah, Makkah, Madinah, and Dammam all have dense 5G coverage. For pilgrims, connectivity in the holy cities is a priority for the carriers: the Grand Mosque in Makkah and the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah have some of the highest-capacity mobile infrastructure on earth, built to handle millions of simultaneous users during Hajj. AlUla — the ancient Nabataean site that anchors Saudi tourism — has solid 4G in town and at the main heritage sites, though signal thins out at remote rock formations.
Mobile data is essential for getting around: Careem and Uber handle ride-hailing (street taxis are rare), the Nusuk app manages Umrah bookings and permits for the Grand Mosque, and Google Maps is the default for navigating cities built around driving. Saudi Arabia has gone heavily cashless — contactless cards and Apple Pay work everywhere, including small shops and food stalls.
Buying a local SIM in Saudi Arabia requires passport registration and a fingerprint scan at a carrier store, which can mean long queues at the airport — especially during Umrah season. A travel eSIM installed before departure skips that entirely: it activates the moment you land at Jeddah, Riyadh, or Madinah airport with no registration required.
Traveling for Umrah or Hajj? Plan Your Data Early
During Hajj and peak Umrah weeks (especially Ramadan), networks around the Grand Mosque handle extreme crowd loads — speeds can slow at peak prayer times even on 5G. Download offline maps of Makkah and your Nusuk permits in advance, and consider a larger data plan: pilgrims consistently use more data than expected on video calls home, live streaming, and group coordination via WhatsApp.
