Connectivity Guide for Sri Lanka
byCharles McQuainSri Lanka's mobile market is led by Dialog (the largest carrier with the best coverage), followed by Mobitel and Hutch. Dialog has extensive 4G/LTE coverage across the island, with 5G available in parts of Colombo. Most travel eSIM providers route through Dialog, which ensures good connectivity in all major tourist areas.
Colombo, Kandy, Galle, and the southern beach towns (Unawatuna, Mirissa, Tangalle) all have strong 4G coverage. The Cultural Triangle — Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa, and Anuradhapura — has reliable connectivity in the towns and at major archaeological sites. Ella and the Hill Country have good coverage along main roads and in town centers, though signal can weaken on remote hiking trails and in deep valleys.
Data is essential for navigating Sri Lanka's winding roads, booking tuk-tuks via PickMe (the local ride-hailing app), and checking train schedules. The scenic Colombo-to-Ella train ride has intermittent coverage — download entertainment before boarding. Most hotels and guesthouses offer WiFi, but speeds vary widely outside Colombo.
PickMe Is Essential in Sri Lanka
PickMe is Sri Lanka's main ride-hailing app — like Grab for Southeast Asia. It works for tuk-tuks and cars and is much cheaper than negotiating fares at tourist sites. You need an active data connection to use it. Download the app and set it up before you arrive.
