Connectivity Guide for Switzerland
byCharles McQuainSwitzerland has three mobile operators: Swisscom (the largest and former state telecom), Sunrise, and Salt. Swisscom has the most extensive coverage, including the best reach into Alpine valleys and mountain areas. Switzerland consistently ranks among the top countries globally for mobile network quality, with widespread 5G deployment across cities and even in many mountain resort towns. Most eSIM providers for travelers connect through Swisscom or Sunrise networks.
Mobile coverage in Switzerland is remarkably good given the challenging Alpine terrain. Cities like Zurich, Geneva, Bern, Basel, and Lucerne have excellent 5G and LTE coverage. The famous scenic train routes — the Glacier Express, Bernina Express, and GoldenPass — have coverage for most of their journeys, though tunnels cause brief interruptions. Major ski resorts (Zermatt, St. Moritz, Grindelwald, Verbier) have strong coverage in the villages, with signal available on many lifts and slopes.
One critical consideration: Switzerland is NOT part of the EU, so EU roaming plans typically do not include Switzerland. This catches many travelers off guard when visiting Switzerland as part of a broader European trip. You will likely need a separate eSIM for Switzerland, or a plan that explicitly lists Switzerland in its coverage. Swiss data plans tend to be more expensive than EU-country equivalents, reflecting the country's higher cost of living.
Switzerland Is Not Covered by EU Roaming
This is the most common mistake travelers make: assuming their EU eSIM plan covers Switzerland. It usually does not. Switzerland is not an EU member, so EU roaming regulations do not apply. Always check your plan's country list before crossing into Switzerland. You may need a separate Swiss or global eSIM plan, which will cost more than typical EU plans.
