Ultra-Fast Connectivity in the UAE
byCharles McQuainThe UAE has two mobile operators — Etisalat (now branded "e&") and du — both of which have deployed extensive 5G networks across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and the other emirates. The UAE consistently ranks in the top five globally for mobile internet speed, with 5G speeds regularly exceeding 1 Gbps in central Dubai.
For travelers, the UAE's small geographic size and massive telecom investment mean coverage is essentially universal. From the Burj Khalifa observation deck to the desert dunes of Liwa, you'll have signal. Both carriers provide seamless coverage throughout the Dubai Metro, airports, and even in remote desert areas near the Omani border.
One important consideration: the UAE restricts VoIP services. WhatsApp calls, FaceTime, and Skype are blocked or degraded by default. Many travelers purchase a VPN or use the UAE's licensed communication apps (BOTIM, ToTok) for voice and video calls. Regular WhatsApp messaging and all other apps work normally.
VoIP Restrictions in the UAE
The UAE blocks most VoIP services including WhatsApp calls, FaceTime, and Skype. Regular messaging works fine — only voice/video calling is affected. Licensed alternatives like BOTIM (paid subscription) work, or you can use a VPN. Be aware that VPN use exists in a legal gray area in the UAE.
