Connectivity Guide for Taiwan
byCharles McQuainTaiwan has excellent mobile infrastructure from three major carriers: Chunghwa Telecom (the largest, with the best coverage), Taiwan Mobile, and Far EasTone. 4G/LTE coverage is nearly universal across the island, including rural areas and mountain regions. 5G is available in Taipei, New Taipei, Taichung, Kaohsiung, and other major cities through all three operators.
Taipei and its surrounding metro area have outstanding connectivity — MRT stations, night markets, temples, and even most hiking trails have reliable signal. Jiufen, Sun Moon Lake, Taroko Gorge, and Alishan all have 4G coverage along main tourist routes, though signal can weaken on remote mountain trails. The east coast (Hualien, Taitung) has good coverage in towns but occasional gaps along coastal and mountain roads.
Taiwan is one of the most eSIM-friendly destinations in Asia. Google Maps works perfectly, and data is essential for using the EasyCard-compatible transit apps, translating Chinese menus, and navigating night markets. Free WiFi (iTaiwan) is available at major tourist sites and MRT stations, but having your own data is far more reliable for navigation and real-time translation.
